Track-By-Track Album Review: Little Mix – Confetti

Little Mix have been dropping new songs left, right and centre in the lead up to their incredible new album that came out this month, titled Confetti. Their 6th studio album was released earlier this month and hit number 2 in the UK charts, which is their highest charting album since their 2016 number 1 album, Glory Days.

The Little Mix girls started dropping singles earlier this year, starting with the catchy “Break Up Song” which was complete with a lockdown-made music video. Next we had the release of “Holiday” and then this month along with their well awaited 6th album, the girls brought out possibly one of their sassiest songs yet, “Sweet Melody”.

This year has been yet another successful one for The X Factor made girlband, even throughout the shambles that 2020 has been, it hasn’t stopped members Perrie, Leigh-Anne, Jesy and Jade from bringing more female empowerment and joy to their millions of fans. Both in the form of music and not forgetting the launch of their own talent show, Little Mix: The Search.

After rising to fame themselves on talent show The X Factor in 2011, Little Mix have put their 9 years of experience in the music industry into their own talent searching show. Airing earlier this year, Little Mix: The Search followed a series of auditions, judged by the girls themselves, of hopeful musicians. The first series of the show crowned boy band Since September the winners and the main support act for Little Mix’s upcoming Confetti Tour which kicks off in April 2021. The Confetti Tour is set to commence in Dublin next year and will feature the majority of songs from the new album, which features a number of upbeat, poppy songs that are bound to have you dancing to them on repeat.

So throw on your party shoes and feel free to dance along as we delve into the new album, in all its glory and as always, it’s exceptional vocals.

Break Up Song

This poppy empowering break up song was the first single to be released from the Confetti album, back in March this year. The Little Mix girls even released a creative lockdown video for the song in May, as well as an infectious dance routine that had everyone with a Tik Tok account dancing along. This song really sets the tone, of catchy with a mix of girl power, for the rest of the album.

Holiday

“Holiday” was the second single to be released before the album, earlier this year. It’s a feel good summer hit with a music video that saw members Perrie, Jesy, Leigh-Anne and Jade giving all the summer vibes while dressed as glamorous mermaids. It’s the perfect song for your summer party playlist.

Sweet Melody

“Sweet Melody” is a sassy, break up song and the perfect bop for anyone that’s had their heart broken by a boy in a band. This song was also complete with a music video, featuring a full choreographed dance routine, that almost had a similar tone to the girls’ previous hit “Salute”.

Confetti

Title track of the album, “Confetti” is a power bop that will be guaranteed to be a talking point of the girls’ Confetti Tour next year (I can picture confetti shooting through the arena on the beat drop during the chorus). It’s addictive beat and playful lyrics, makes this song a go to party anthem.

Happiness

Following the female empowerment vibe of the rest of the album, the lyrics for “Happiness” follow the theme of moving on from a relationship and feeling happy and secure on your own and finding love within yourself. We all need a bit of self love from time to time!

Not a Pop Song

“Not a Pop Song” is the sassy response to the band cutting ties with Simon Cowell’s label Syco back in 2018. The lyrics such as “I don’t do what Simon says” and “be a puppet on a string” suggest the girls are happy to have parted ways with The X Factor judge.

Nothing But My Feelings

This melodic and racy track marks the halfway point of the album and is a teasing poppy track that fits well with the rest of the album, with lyrics such as “you should come and see me in nothing but my feelings”.

Gloves Up

“Gloves Up” has a similar feel to one of the girls’ earlier tracks “DNA”, this feisty fight song is a must have for your workout playlist.

A Mess (Happy 4 U)

A personal favourite of mine, “A Mess (Happy 4 U)”, describes the bittersweet feeling of seeing an ex moving on and being happy for them even if it hurts. The lyrics “please don’t say hi, I don’t wanna be rude, she seems so sweet and I’m trying to be cool” perfectly place you in that awkward moment of seeing an ex with someone new and the mixed emotions you get from it.

My Love Won’t Let You Down

“My Love Won’t Let You Down” is the main ballad on the album and a guaranteed tearjerker if it makes the setlist for the band’s tour next year. The empathetic and slow track is a promise to be there for you in your darkest days.

Rendezvous

The second amorous song on the album, “Rendezvous”, this track shows the girls’ harmonious vocals mashed together and seems to be a fan favourite on social media. During their livestream for the album release the band tweeted “Rendezvous… I mean what more to say than a sexy sexy little song”. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

If You Want My Love

Another track with a beat that is likely to be a showstopper when the girls are once again able to perform in front of a live audience. Complete with one of Perrie’s iconic high notes, this song opens with “sick and tired of your same mistakes” which fits the sassy break up theme that runs throughout the rest of the album.

Breathe

The final song on the album is another bittersweet lovesick track, titled “Breathe”. A few observant fans noticed at the beginning of this song are a series of someone shouting ‘hey’, which a number of fans believed to be that of fellow musician Harry Styles. Unfortunately that isn’t true but Perrie and Leigh-Anne joked in a recent interview, with Capital’s Roman Kemp, that “if having Harry Styles do a hey at the last song of our album gets it to number one we’ll take it, he did the hey”. Now the idea is out there, could this be the grounds for a Little Mix and Harry Styles Collab? I certainly hope so!
