Lewis Capaldi: Divinely Uninspired To a Hellish Extent Tour

Date: 11th March 2020
Location: Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff
(Contains spoilers from the tour)

The tickets for this tour went on sale nearly a year ago and after much anticipation, Lewis Capaldi’s first official UK headline arena tour arrived in Wales.

Opening the show was Donna Missal, who’s free spirit and powerful vocals captured the audience’s attention throughout her set. Along with her catchy songs, she brought a feminist ambience to the arena with her speech after one of her songs, where she expressed that her and her full female band were the only women on this tour. She then declared to the women in the audience that “we’re here to represent you all tonight and show you that you are powerful”.

Next was Alec Benjamin, who captured the entire motorpoint arena with his beautifully melodious vocals and his endearing songs. His charming personality shined through in his final song when he forgot the lyrics to his own song and then politely asked if everyone could forget that that happened (Sorry Alec, it was too cute to forget).

After a tedious half an hour wait, the lights went down and Capaldi’s set began in a way that could be described as nothing less than iconic. A video flashed onto the screen of this year’s Grammys where Capaldi lost to fellow nominee Billie Eilish for the award for song of the year. The video showed Capaldi looking devastated while clapping before the video zoomed in, turned black and white and flashed words like “virgin” and “your parents hate you so much”. The humorous video then averted into a video of Capaldi dancing to Eilish’s award winning song Bad Guy.

Capaldi then surfaced on stage to a raw of cheers from his adoring audience, where he opened with Grace. If he hadn’t started the show off so amusingly I would have almost been disappointed he didn’t start pole dancing (like in the songs accomping music video).

If fans were still concerned the tour would be all singing (even after that intro) and that we wouldn’t get to see the hysterically entertaining side of Capaldi that you can see on his Instagram stories, then they were very wrong. In between many of his songs, he took time to comically tell the audience how much money he was making from this show alone and in introducing his song One he asked who in the audience was single and proceeded to jokingly call them “lonely bastards”. He also stated that he “hasn’t played enough shows in Wales” which I think the Welsh audience very much appreciated.

Not only did Capaldi entertain the crowd with his witty jokes but he also completely blew everyone away with his heart wrenchingly catchy ballards and his powerfully melodic vocals. He closed his set with his much loved singles, Before You Go and the powerful number 1 single, that made the world fall in love with the remarkably hilarious and adorable “fat loser from Scotland” (his words lol), Someone You Loved.

Ultimately, Capaldi made the entire show exceedingly entertaining with his comedic personality and incredible performance of his songs from his debut album Divinely Uninspired To a Hellish Extent, making it well worth the year long wait.
